Would love to see Wright State bring in some players from Overseas. Seemed like Wright State was one of the first teams to bring in Foreign players, beginning with the Underhill era. Players like Herriman, Potapenko, Sheinfeld, Nahar, Kos and I think Bruno Peterson was from Latvia. Can anyone think of any other foreign players who played for Wright State? Back then before the internet, a player from overseas didn't know the difference between Wright State and Duke. Now, they know the good programs and their worth in the college hoops market. So, those days are over. Bruno was from the Chicago area, I think it was Warrenville, Illinois to be exact.

As Runt pointed out, those days are long gone and not coming back for us, at least with our current coaching staff. As I mentioned a few posts back when I brought up what Cole Gentry lacked as a recruiter, it is all about relationships. A very large part of recruiting is knowing who to recruit and getting your foot in the door. Underhill was able to bring in overseas recruits in a large part because he knew overseas scouts that would tell him they had a handful of kids it would be worth taking a look at. Those scouts made sure those kids would be interested in the chance to come to the US and going to school at WSU. They would also make sure those kids would be able to get through the NCAA clearinghouse. Underhill would travel overseas every other year to take a look at those kids then. We don’t have a coach on our staff with any of those connections and like Runt pointed out, kids overseas now know they have much better options to come to the US than coming to WSU. Nowadays more foreign players also come to the US and spend a year at prep schools to get the exposure they need to get scholarships. Ultimately, it isn’t a goal of our coaching staff to bring in foreign recruits. If anything, I know they would like to recruit better locally in Ohio.

Do we even have an opening for another full time assistant coach or just a player development position? Feels like maybe we should be tempering our expectations for how big of an impact the remaining staff position is going to be.

Big D, thanks for filling in the blanks on how Ralph Underhill got players from Europe. I assume Coach Underhill had some connections to I think it was St. Catherine College in Kentucky since several players went there for a year before coming to WSU.

I’m 2023 the NCAA changed the rules for the number of assistant coaches allowed. I am not sure what the exact rule is and how many of those coaches can recruit off campus etc.

The limit is 3, which is where we are at. Bere, Trice, and Gentry.

I like the Col Gentry hire. Time will tell if it works out, but seems like a smart move. He's young and energetic, can relate to recruits (and provide insights on what playing for/attending WSU is really like), and clearly had a high b-ball IQ. I'm guessing we got him well within the budget, leaving some funds for other hires as necessary.

Jaheim just recommitted from Wright State, following Nagy to SIU Damn. Thought Bere staying on would help us hold onto him since he was the lead recruiter there. Pull to stay closer to home must have been stronger.

Happy WSU is keeping the other two recruits but was hoping Jaheem was going to be a Raider. Maybe he will join WSU after his redshirt season at SIU.

Lol great comment +1 I laughed SIU is going to struggle to fill out a roster though so he may actually get to play against Nagy's wishes. Not sure they can get enough portal guys in to field the 7 man rotation he'll use.

I was going to give him comment of the year. Still a lot of time left but that was gold. He has a great point might have happened if Nagy was here. Or play very little minutes. I hope our current coaches can land some of these impressive transfers. It feels like last year when we had some intriguing transfers on our list, but we missed out on all of them.
