It's pretty exhausting to be a wsu fan. With NIL and our lack of success in the portal I'm afraid it's going to get more and more exhausting. Even if our freshmen are great, we are going to lose them the following year to bigger programs. Let's just be real about that. I'm not sure how to navigate the portal but damn this is brutal. The portal might still be opened but at some point it will just be d2 players that should only be walk ons. Guess there is still time but it's not looking good. You might want to just take a step back away from the ledge and let things play out before you jump. Everything isn’t all doom and gloom. We have 5 spots to fill but quite honestly none of us have any clue as to what our staff has been doing and how close they are to filling out the roster. We have lost some guys to the portal the last few years but we have kept more than we lost and most that left were encouraged to look elsewhere. Out of they guys we wish we would have kept, Basille is the only one that had any type of success and the team he transferred to didn’t even make it into the tournament. I’m sure our staff keeps pointing that out to the players they want to keep. This fall, there was an article about the portal from last year. 35% of the kids that entered the portal last spring still didn’t have a new home as late as August. I assume we will see similar numbers this year. I also think it is just a matter of time before there is some collective bargaining agreement put in place where there is going to be a salary cap put in place and kids are going to have to sign actual contracts with the school so this transfer mania will slow down. If that doesn’t happen I think you will see 2 big issues going forward. Kids won’t be able to graduate because it is almost impossible to stay on track to graduate when you bounce from school to school and each school’s degree requirements are different. The bigger issue for these kids is that these collectives are going to go belly up because donors are going to get sick of this mercenary bs. You are already seeing this now at even some of the bigger schools. Several Michigan football players just entered the portal and it was reported that they did so because their NIL checks were bouncing that they received from their collective. I don’t know what college athletics is going to look like in a few years but it won’t be this because this model is not sustainable.

You should really do a little bit of research into last year's transfers and guys that transferred this year in the portal so far. Here is a link of D2 transfers from Verbal commits: verbalcommits.com/transfers/2023/D2There are a lot of D2 transfers headed to other HL schools and teams we are playing in our OOC schedule next year. There are D2 guys transferring to Washington State, Auburn, Georgia, and Memphis.

I agree that we need to use the transfer portal, but it can't be the primary method for building a roster. Or if it is, we need to make a lot of changes to the transfers we recruit. We don't want to become Detroit Mercy. It seems to be working out quite well for Milwaukee in their first season with their new coach.

Now Mike DePersia is in the portal too. Big blow for the Jags. That's not much of a blow in loosing DePersia. It looks like IUPUI's coach is cleaning house. He wasn't hired until mid-April last year and didn't really get a chance to add much to their roster in the late signing period. In the early signing period he added 5 recruits (2 freshmen and 3 JUCOs) and has already gotten commitments from 2 more JUCOs in the late signing period. It looks like he knows their roster needed a complete overhaul and is trying to make it happen sooner rather than later.

If you follow our recruiting, it doesn't look like our staff thinks we are losing anyone. We have 1 remaining scholarship available if everyone is returning and it looks like they are going after a guard to fill with that last spot. If they thought Grant leaving was an option, you would think they would seriously be looking at post players. It doesn't look like that is the case.

Personally, I love our 2 commitments. They both fit the mold of the type of players Nagy wants in his system. Norris is one hell of a shooter and he is a tough gritty type of point guard that we need to run our offense. Braun looks like a more physically mature version of Grant Basille when we signed him a couple of years ago. He can play inside and has a developing outside game. Both guys look like they play with a good motor and still have a ton of upside once our staff gets they in the weight room and coaches them up. Based on who else we were recruiting, it looked like we wanted to add another wing guard. Most of the guys we had offered committed elsewhere except for Trey Woodyard. He is the only open offer we have out right now that I know of. He is another big time shooter that would fit our system well.

I really hope Smith reconsiders transferring. I don't know why he would want to leave a 20+ win team that just went to back to back post season tournaments for a team that went 12-20 last year.

I know it may be a bit premature, but that's exactly why I'm asking: Just for fun, go ahead, place your bets now. Do you think our Raiders will be playing in March Madness this year? -Currently 15-5 -7-0 in conference play, best start in conference play in school history -Only 7 guys deep, but as Big D stated in another thread, our last NCAA Tournament team also went 7 deep. What do you think? I think we will be 8 deep before the year is over. That is my prediction.
