Not totally shocked by this. It has become the norm to lose a few players each year. We'll be fine.

Not totally shocked by this. It has become the norm to lose a few players each year. We'll be fine. While you're probably right (we were just fine this year), wouldn't it be great if this WASN'T the norm? These kids put in work all season, develop chemistry, form a brotherhood, and then one of the players who was really coming into his own decides to abandon his brothers to seek greener pasture? Now we're going to have to completely realign this team from a point guard standpoint. We've got Gentry for another season, but we literally have nobody to come in and reprieve Cole. Considering that we've only got Cole for one more season, we've got a gigantic hole that we have to figure out lickity split. Does anybody think Jack Hendricks is ready to make the jump up? Does anybody think that Nagy is prepared to give another (unsigned) freshman point guard legitimate minutes next season? So moving forward, we now have two open scholarships (Big D, relying on your here)...I'm not sure bringing in a 5th year point guard is a great move, but we all know that Smith was the answer going forward, and now we don't have that answer.

I think we are going to lose one of our incoming recruits too. You gonna leave us hanging like that?? I didn’t see this one coming. I was honestly waiting for Skyelar to announce his transfer (no actual source to make me think that, just my own opinion considering the tough year he’s surely had off the court and wanting to be closer to home). I want to think that this is because he sees his role staying the same, or possibly shrinking, but probably not growing next season. But I assumed Malachi definitely had a solid spot on this squad so I’m thinking the worst that he just doesn’t want to be at WSU, and the above comment has me worried more so about that

If we lose a newcomer this coming season does not look nearly as exciting as it did yesterday. Two open scholarships and not a sniff so far of who we have been going after for the first one so who knows what’s going on with this other one but what are the chances we get someone better than Malachi was.
I’m probably being paranoid (sorry) but after losing Omar so quickly also this puts a bad taste in my mouth.

WTF are you talking about? We have a great incoming PG next year, Trey Calvin. You gonna leave us hanging like that?? He's talking about Noah Friedel. Rumor is he is trying to get out of his LOI to stay closer to home. That has not been confirmed yet. Two open scholarships and not a sniff so far of who we have been going after for the first one so who knows what’s going on with this other one but what are the chances we get someone better than Malachi was. Who says we don't have anyone lined up to fill our open scholarships? Just because there isn't anything new on the recruiting board does not mean there isn't anything happening. Half of this year's recruiting class didn't have threads on them until after we found out they had committed to Wright State. Nagy has been a head coach for a couple of decades. Do you honestly think any of this took him by surprise and that he hasn't already started working on plan B? I'm not happy about this either but if these guys don't want to be here then I don't want them here. I trust in Nagy.

Yea, the reality is the transfer portal and transfers in general are a reality in college basketball today. I don’t know what the current # is for kids in the portal but I think it’s on average 1-2 kids per team. You hate to lose out and players like Winchester and Smith to transfers, and it’s unfortunate losing signees two years in a row (one due to grades, the other cold feet). BUT the roster is solid next year and those 3 coming in next year look promising. Don’t get caught up on the “4-star” transfer from Arizona. We took a chance on him not knowing much and it didn’t take long to realize he was t going to play, so had to let him know that. Shocking to hear I know but that was a WSU decision. No doubt the coaches are looking to fill a couple roster spots, never a bad thing to keep one open for a mid-year transfer (e.g. Cole Gentry). We’ve got a solid roster for next year, a need a point guard in 2 years will be filled by current signees, or make it even more enticing for a transfer or HS recruit to come here and be able to start/compete for a starting spot right away in 2 years.

The fact that this is college basketball's reality now is unfortunate. I really enjoyed watching Malachi grow throughout this year, and was looking forward to him having a great career.
Losing Friedel would also be a hit, but that could open the door for Manns, Holden, or Harris to become a bigger part of the rotation.
Without any more changes (knock on wood), I could see a core rotation of:
Gentry Potter Hall Wampler Love
Basile Holden
Beyond that, it will be interesting to see who is more physically ready between Calvin, Harris, and any other additions. Manns improving could be a big boost to this roster...
I hope we add one more bigger body. Maybe a JUCO or transfer, or someone that could give 5-10 minutes right away and be an insurance policy in case of injury.

I do like those 7 guys! Certainly nothing to complain about. The loss of Malachi just gives me this thought that we are going to have another season that starts really poorly and then turns around in conference play because there is less chemistry, which just sucks. But maybe that won’t happen! I’m sure we’ll bring in solid guys and hopefully they can contribute enough minutes we need them to and not just be a body on the floor. At least we have started on this a little earlier rather than finding out in the summer! Go Raiders!

At the end of the last 2 seasons, I think we all looked at the roster and the incoming recruits and thought that we finally had the depth and talent necessary to take this program to a higher level, which to me, means having a team that could actually win a game or two in the NCAA tournament. And then bang. Winchester leaves, Davenport bails out, and then the season starts with Hall and Basile out with injuries. It took until mid-season for the team to gel and go on a run through the HL. Now it appears the same thing is happening this year with Smith leaving and possibly one of our recruits bailing as well. I'm starting to feel like a bridesmaid who never makes it to the alter.
So now this team is down to basically a 6 man rotation to start the season (Gentry, Love, Wampler, Potter, Hall, & Basile) and at least 2 of the freshman and possibly all 3 will need to step up and contribute. And no, I haven't forgot about Manns. But my gut tells me he's only going to see the floor in an emergency situation, such as injuries or more defections. It's tough to stay at the top of the HL heap when you have to rely on freshman to fill out your rotation. But hope springs eternal. Regardless of what transpires between now and November, I'll be a loyal fan sitting court side and hoping for the best.

Could be interpreted a couple ways I guess (between the playing time comments and the “not fitting in” bit) but to me I guess I’m going to take out of this that he didn’t feel like he was as close with the guys on the team as the rest of them probably are to each other. That doesn’t surprise me. He seems quieter than the others and I’m sure there are some really big personalities on that team, as is true with any college sports team. Wish him all the best, team chemistry definitely matters a ton

Jack Hendricks is outta here Well. I mean, if there had to be another transfer, at least it's not a "crucial" player. He was a walk-on from Fairmont and barely saw the floor at mid-level mid-major team...I'm not sure there's some other great opportunity at the D1 level for him. I guess at this point we should be thankful we're not losing a role player, but it certainly makes me wonder if there's something we don't know, or if these kids just want more time on the floor.

These sessions and evaluations lead to these situations. Can you imagine what Vest’s evaluations were like under Donlon? I’m not a supporter of coaches who “run players off” but honesty is best in spelling out what they can expect.
