Well. I mean, if there had to be another transfer, at least it's not a "crucial" player. He was a walk-on from Fairmont and barely saw the floor at mid-level mid-major team...I'm not sure there's some other great opportunity at the D1 level for him. I guess at this point we should be thankful we're not losing a role player, but it certainly makes me wonder if there's something we don't know, or if these kids just want more time on the floor. You don’t have to read between the lines here. When he signed last year he made it pretty clear in his interview with the DDN that he was walking on in the hope to earn a scholarship. He was given a full season to prove he deserved a scholarship next year and was told that wasn’t going to happen so he decided to leave. No loss here. He was a warm body for practice. He was never going to start for us. In regards to Malachi, I think he saw the writing on the wall and figured out he was probably never going to start at Wright State and decided to transfer. We wasn’t going to beat out Cole for our starting PG spot next year and anyone that has been around the program knows how much Nagy loves Trey Calvin. He called him our future PG in the press release when we signed him. I don’t think Smith would have ever started at SG for us either. Potter is a better shooter and has a higher ceiling athletically. He was probably going to win our starting SG spot next year. I don’t think Smith wanted to be a career 6th man here and decided to move on. It’s a shame. Best case scenario is he would have earned one of those starting spots. Worse case, he would have been a guy that got a ton of minutes backing up the 1 and the 2.

09, we were not “fine” this year . we lost 14 games, won 19 real games, lost the hl championship. rpi somewhere in triple digits. that is not ok and losing Winchester was a huge blow. I watched us play Tennessee in ncaa and ew was the guy who looked like he belonged on the floor with them.
Malachi was going to be a solid guard for us and probably start his last two years. If not a starter he would have been in the rotation and helped us. I have no idea how our freshman will do next year. This is another big loss. Nothing we can do about these losses but to act like everything is fine and dandy anyway is not very realistic.
I think we have a two year window to make a bit of a run and every player we lose makes it that much tougher.

This is a disappointing loss to lose Malachi Smith. I'll be honest I thought if anyone left it would be Potter. Sometimes his body language to me was not very positive in the floor. But maybe he just had that look! I hope Potter stays obviously.
Who knows what these kids are thinking but it happens everywhere now.
BigD you make some interesting points about Smith not seeing himself as a starter. You could be right. But my first thought is Smith saw his potential after how well he played the second half of the season and thought maybe he could go to a more prestigious program Smith was a big reason Wright State won many games as the season went on. He seemed to be gaining poise throughout the season. I feel for Nagy. He just cant seem to get consistency with his recruits. On the bright side...we received Wampler as a transfer and he was huge so it happens across the board.

I hope the best for Smith. I enjoyed watching him play.If he develops his outside shot he could be a great player at the mid major level...
Onto Trey Calvin! Tough job for these college coaches...but hey they make a lot of money so dont feel too bad for them!

oh, horsefeathers big d!!! point out what I said that was inaccurate!! you can’t because it is all true. my point was, and still is, that losing guys like ew and ms retards our growth and makes becoming a quality program more difficult. If you don’t see that , sorry.

If you don’t see that , sorry. AND my point is that you are the most negative person on this board by far and it is getting old. We could announce that we are signing a top 200 recruit and you would find a way to bitch that he isn’t a top 100 recruit. Our season could have gone better and we all wanted it to have been better but it wasn’t a bad season by any stretch of the imagination. We hit 2 milestones no other Raider team has ever achieved before. Every team loses players to transfer. There are 350+ D1 teams and there was over 800 transfers last year. That number goes up every year. It’s not just a problem we are having. It’s the new reality of college basketball today. If you cannot accept that I suggest you follow college bowling. I hear that sport has the lowest turnover rate among college sports.

Do you have any insider info on the possibility of a Grad Transfer or maybe a JUCO coming in who could play this upcoming season? I know Nagy has not been a coach who goes after JUCO's in the past, but this year could be an exception if we ultimately end up with only 10 scholarship players to start the season.

I feel like we are in a position where we are almost forced to be looking for guys to contribute right away from the transfer market or JUCO pool. Obviously there is no benefit in trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and if a guy just doesn’t fit our system then he doesn’t but we could really benefit from that immediate playing eligibility more so this upcoming season than the last couple seasons probably

Nothing that I can share beyond that our staff has been pursuing several grad transfers and traditional transfers that will have to sit out a year. I don’t know of any JUCOs we are going after but my inside information is limited.

Last time we landed a grad transfer (someone can certainly correct me if my memory has slipped) was Mike LaTulip from Illinois. We don't have a great history of getting those players (but not sure we've really needed many). It's not surprising to hear that we're making a push to land at least one. Playing time is available with 2 starters being gone at the 1 and at the 5.
I'm sure there will be opportunities to see time at the floor at the 4/5 position with Parker gone and Basile being our only other legitimate inside option behind Big Lou. It would be great to see someone who can eat up minutes in there if Love misses time or gets in foul trouble.
There's also an opportunity at PG behind Gentry while we get Trey Calvin up to speed. I don't see how he isn't coming off the bench almost immediately, even if we can land a grad transfer.
Just my .02

First of all, if you are the real Vernard Hollins, you are one of my all time favorite players at WSU. But to your comment, which I understand is in jest, losing 4 talented players in the last 2 years is dismaying to me. I don't include Theilmann because I think the staff saw him in practice and determined he wasn't worthy of a slot on the team. I love this program and want it taken to a level where winning games in the NCAA Tournament is a reality. So when you have a constant turnover on your roster, it makes it difficult to get to that level. The mid-majors that make runs in the Tournament are teams with upper class men who have played together for 3 or 4 years. I seriously thought last years team was on the cusp of doing that, but then Winchester and Davenport left, Hall got injured, and it took until the middle of this season for the team to gel and go on a winning streak. And now the same thing is happening again. Next years rotation as it stands right now will only have 5 players with any D1 playing experience, so once again, it will take some time to work the newcomers into the rotation. I'm just disappointed in the setback. I guess if I just lower my expectations, then I wouldn't be so disappointed.
